Late Show Performance May 3; Dates With Neil Young Upcoming
(AUSTIN, TX) With critics raving about their new album Something Real, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real are taking their music to the people over the coming months, with a few very notable names worked in along the way.
Led by the “groove-laden” (Rolling Stone) title track first single (see the video here), Something Real delivers a “melting pot of influences that come into play on any given song,” according to All Music. “That knack for variety serves them well and suggests that there just might be something to that ‘cowboy hippie surf rock’ claim.”
Almost 40 dates are already on the books through mid-summer, including two runs as Neil Young + Promise of the Real, the latter being a lengthy trek through Europe. The band also headlines their own dates throughout the U.S. in support of Something Real. Wedged into the schedule is Lukas’ acoustic date with fellow second-generation music maker Shooter Jennings and, with the full band, a trip to New York for a May 3 appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
Much like their music, the lineup iterations for Lukas Nelson and friends are constantly evolving. Anthony LoGerfo, Corey McCormick and Tato Melgar are the core of Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, with Lukas’ brother Micah Nelson serving as a guest and honorary member. Micah was part of the recording of Something Real and often joins on the road when not fronting his own band Insects Vs. Robots. That band, incidentally, are opening the bulk of the May LN&POTR dates.
Additionally, Lukas, Anthony, Corey, Tato and Micah are always present in the Promise of the Real part of Neil Young + Promise of the Real. Occasionally, Lukas finds himself in an acoustic-only pairing with Shooter Jennings, and their cover of “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys” is actually the theme for Netflix’ new series The Ranch starring Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson.
Music lovers lucky enough to catch any of the above are in for an “intoxicating” treat. As Popmatters recently noted, “What really puts Lukas Nelson at a higher level is how he’s just as good a soulful songwriter as he is a guitar player … He also knows how to craft a setlist to keep a set energized and a crowd engaged …. using the power of music to transform an ordinary venue into a sacred musical temple.”
Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real’s album Something Real is out now on Royal Potato Family.
